Festival Of The Steel Phallus, Obviously NSFW

Every spring Kanamara Matsuri or Festival of the Steel Phallus takes place in Kawasaki. The Shinto celebration highlight is when they literally carry a giant phallus through the streets to the shrine. They are praying for fertility, good marriages, and of course protection from STIs. Legend has it that a woman's vagina was inhabited by a demon that had some pretty sharp teeth and a liking for any manly bits that came near. After two wedding nights that ended in a bit more blood than was necessary to prove her virginity, she got a blacksmith to make her a steel phallus which cracked the demons nasty teeth. Was this perhaps the inspiration for the movie Teeth? If you haven't seen that...well maybe you shouldn't.

The current festival is a definite must for tourists, and besides the amazingness you get to witness it also raises money for HIV research. You can buy phallic shaped candy, lollipops (of course), candles, and any number of other things. Sadly this year's festival has already passed, but if you're free April 3, 2016 you know where to go.
